A dress from salvaged scraps no one else wanted

How many times have I said it that I love making new things out of stuff no one else wanted? Well, I don't think I can say it enough, so I'm saying it again: I love making new things out of stuff no one else wanted! :P

In my last post I mentioned I bought a bag of fabric from the fabric store for 5 euros. Most pieces were scraps and fabric pieces that had discoloration or huge holes they'd cut out as samples at the factory. Among that bag of fabric was this mess:

It's a dark blue knit jersey that's in several pieces. Some spots are missing the print stars, others had white stripes running across them, most pieces had seams sewn into them across the fabric (I don't know why. If someone does, please tell me!), and sometimes the seams were on the right side of the fabric. All in all, it was a big pile of "no one's ever going to use this crap", so naturally I had to.

I got inspired by this dress someone linked in a sewing group that I'm part of on Facebook.

Image from the above link.

So I drafted something like this:

There were rough measurements on the site, but I just measured myself and adjusted the "pattern" accordingly. Around the chest, shoulder to desired hem length, around my hips and desired length of sleeve.

Then I cut out the pieces from my scraps. I could have cut the pieces avoiding the visible seams on the right side of the fabric, or the white stripes, but instead I decided to incorporate them into the dress for a more interesting look.

I only used my serger for this dress, so it was quite fast to make. I serged the pockets onto the side seams, then serged the raglan sleeves onto the bodice pieces like for example in this tutorial here and finally serged the seam down from wrist to hem. Add cuffs to the hem, neckline and ends of sleeves (a video tutorial of that by Annika Victoria here), and my dress was done!

I made the main pieces from the star patterned stuff, leaving one on-the-outside seam on the front and giving one sleeve some white stripes. I made the cuffs with the portion that was missing the stars altogether, and this is what came out of the ordeal:

So, what do you think of this scrap pieces dress? I'm loving the carefree look that the extra seams and discoloration give. I feel like the dress would be boring without these little details. What do you think? Yay or nay? :)

Another quick refashion: piano keys dress.

Hey all,
I made another really quick and simple refashion.

I found this green velvet dress from Salvation Army secondhand store (I think it was like 4 euros?). It was nice and cozy but a bit too short. So I took a piano keys scarf that I got from a friend like 6 years ago, and I sewed it onto the hem.

And tah-dah, a piano keys dress!

I'm also working on another dress for winter from a fabric I found at the Salvation Army store for 1 euro. More about that once I have time to finish the project!

What do you think of this refash? :)

Quick refashion: awful dress into a sweet skirt!

Heya,
So this was just a quick refashion project.

I got this dress for free (a neighbor was moving away and cleaned her closet - she'd left some dresses hanging in the basement with a note that said they're free for the taking). I immediately loved the baggy cream-colored hem, but I also had an instant dislike towards the top part.

I tried it on, and it looked exactly like something I'd never wear: the top part made my arms and shoulders look way bigger and flabbier than they are and the waistline starting right below the boobs just doesn't flatter my body (actually, I don't think it flatters pretty much anyone's body, but that's just my opinion...) Also, as a dress it was waaaaaay too short for me. Like, inappropriately short. I could never have worn it as-is without flashing everyone within a mile's radius.

So, I pinned the hem piece below the top to keep the lining and main fabric together, then cut right above the pins.

I serged the edge to keep the two layers of fabric together.

Then I destroyed the top piece to make a waistband.

I simply serged the waistband on, leaving a gap of a few inches, through which I then pulled a wide elastic band. I sewed the ends of the elastic together and closed the gap in the waistband.

And done!

Fox applique shirt

Hello again,
So last night I suddenly realized there weren't enough foxes in my life. Or specifically, on my clothes. Because foxes are awesome, right?

So I searched for a nice fox image to applique on a shirt.

I found this cute fox couple by Etsy user mikaart, and since this is only for my own use I shamelessly copied it. :P

I used a brown fabric, freehanded the foxes on it and cut out:

Then I used the fabric paint pens and a fabric marker to color the foxes in.

Then I made a shirt for the foxes.

It's literally the easiest shirt to make: it's one piece, with seams running under-arm and down the sides, the neck-hole cut in the middle. I serged the sides and also serged in the edge pieces. It takes like an hour to finish this kind of shirt.

The safety pin in the middle is to mark where the applique will be placed.

Then I pinned and sewed the foxes onto the shirt, along the edges.

And done!

So, what do you think of this applique shirt? :)

Bird-print dress and a vintage scale print skirt

Hey all,
So I hope you liked the book clutch tutorial I posted a while ago. If you've made one yourself, I'd love to see the results!

So I feel like every time I post, I start off with a "I've been super busy lately with studying and stuff..." and this time is no different. I have managed to squeeze in a couple of projects, though.

The first one is a dress. I found this blue-and-white bird patterned jersey at a fabric store for 1,70€/kg. There was a huge amount of it, but it was from the end of the fabric, where they cut out the test pieces (they cut out circular pieces off of the middle of the fabric to see that the color and stretch and everything is good).

So the fabric looked something like this:

I loved the bird print, so holes or not, I had to get the fabric.

Thankfully there was a lot of the fabric, holey as it was. Because of the holes, I just had to piece the dress together out of small pieces. So for example the skirt part was made of 8 pieces like this:

I didn't take pictures of the process, but here's the end result:

I really like how it turned out. It's pretty but totally suitable to wear in an everyday situation.

***

Then, in a fit of sudden "I have nothing to do what should I-- OH HEY I could clean up my fabric cupboard!" I went and pulled all my fabric out of the cupboard and then put them neatly back in.

This resulted in a lot of "whoa, I didn't even remember I had this fabric!"

So I took out this piece:

It's one of the fabrics I got from my grandma-in-law in the summer, so it's vintage and dyed in a local factory some decades back. I like the scale-like / scallop patterns. And you can really tell the dye-job is good, because you can see it on the other side of the fabric as well so it's dyed all the way through the fabric.

Here's the front piece:

It's got three pleats and blue-patterned hidden pockets coming along. The back piece was about twice as wide as the front and also pleated, so the pockets are not quite in the side seams but a bit toward the front, hidden in pleats.

Here's the finished result, the pockets are at the seams in the front:

Peek-a-boo pocket!

And here's a gazillion pictures of me wearing the skirt:

I really like how the skirt turned out. It's sort of vintage-y yet still edgy and looks fresh. What do you think? :)

DIY book clutch tutorial / laukku kirjasta -tutoriaali (ENG/FIN)

Note: for easier reading, English will be written in regular font (and Finnish will be bolded.) Click on pictures to see larger versions!

Huom! Suomenkielinen teksti on boldattu tutoriaalin seuraamisen helpottamiseksi! Kuvat saa klikkaamalla isommiksi.

This is a tutorial for making a clutch from a book (like in the picture above). Here's what you'll need:
- A hardcover book/notebook you're willing to gut (i.e. remove the pages)
- Fabric that matches your book cover
- Iron-on interfacing if you wish the insides of the clutch to keep their shape better (optional)
- Two coordinating zippers: one that is long enough to go around the sides of your book when it's closed (minus the back) and one that is slightly shorter than the long side of your book
- Bias tape (you can buy some or make your own), about 2-2.5 times the length of your longer zipper
- A sewing machine, coordinating thread, pins etc.
- Glue. I used some generic craft glue but some swear by E6000. Your call, just make sure it's suitable for fabric and cardboard and that it will hold. :)
(- ModPodge or other decoupage lacquer if you want to protect the book cover from weather)

Tutoriaali: kuinka tehdä ylläolevan kuvan näköinen laukku kirjasta. Tarvitset:
- Kovakantisen kirjan/muistikirjan jonka kykenet paloittelemaan osiin (eli riipimään sivut pois)

Rough guide to fabric pieces / summittaiset kaavat:

This is just a rough guide that might help you determine how much fabric you will need.
Measure your book open like in the picture (after removing the pages). This will give you the length (1) and width (2) of the fabric that will be glued against the book. This is piece A. Cut one.

Piece B is the inside of the clutch, so the width is the same as on piece A, but the length (3) depends on how many folded pockets / credit card slots you want in your clutch (the pockets/slots will be done like knife pleats). Cut at least 2.5 times the length (1), it's easier to trim the excess off if needed than to try to add to the length later. (The dotted lines just show where the bottom of the clutch will be, you can ignore them at this time.) Cut one.

Piece C is the inside middle pocket (with zipper), and it should be about as wide as your A and B pieces (or just a bit narrower) and your shorter zipper should fit the width. The length depends on how tall you want the pocket in the middle be (all the way up / halfway up the clutch or something in between?). The dotted line shows where the fabric will be folded, so the length from the fold should the the length from the bottom of your clutch to how tall you want your pocket to sit in your clutch. So in short, if you want your inside zipper pocket come all the way up, make it the same size as your piece A minus about an inch off the length, and take more off the length the smaller you want the pocket to be. Cut two C pieces from your fabric.

Piece D is the side "accordion" piece. It should be as long as your C piece (it looks shorter in the drawing, sorry about that), and the narrow ends should be as wide as the width of the back of your book (plus seam allowance). The dotted fold line determines how wide your clutch will open, so adjust the width to how wide you want the finished clutch to open. Cut two D pieces.

Pieces E and F go around the longer zipper. Cut 4 E pieces and 4 F pieces. The E pieces will be sandwiched around the ends of the longer zipper, so they should be around 1 inch wider than your zipper and about 2 inches long. F pieces should be about 2 inches wide and as long as your longer zipper plus roughly 4 inches (or so much it covers the length of your zipper plus the E piece sewn onto the ends).

If you're using interfacing, you should cut same pieces from interfacing as well (except D and E pieces) and iron the interfacing onto the back of your pieces.

I know this looks confusing as hell, but I promise it will get clearer when we get started!

Mittaa kirjasi aukinaisena kuten kuvassa (poistettuasi ensin sivut). Leikkaa 1 kappale A:ta.

Suosittelen leikkaamaan 2,5x A:n pituisen, koska pituudesta on helppo napsaista pois ylimääräinen tarvittaessa, mutta pituutta on vaikea lisätä myöhemmin.

Katkoviiva osoittaa kankaan taitoksen, joten katkoviivasta yläreunaan = kuinka korkea tasku laukun sisällä on, ja koko palan pituus on siis kaksi kertaa taskun korkeus.

***

So let's get started!
Aloitetaan!

First, gut the book, and if you want, you can coat the cover with ModPodge or other decoupage lacquer for protection.
Leikkaa kirjan sivut irti ja halutessasi lakkaa kirjan kannet decoupage-lakalla.

Then you should cut the pieces. Here are my pieces, and the book I'm using for reference:
Leikkaa sitten palat kankaasta.

Next, we'll need pieces A and B. Use pins or chalk to mark the center on B and fold A like in the picture (to be used beside B as a reference to length).

Aluksi tarvitsemme paloja A ja B. Merkitse B-palan keskitaite esim. nuppineuloilla ja taita A-pala kuvan mukaisesti (sitä käytetään B:n rinnalla pituusreferenssinä).

To make pockets on the inside of the bag, fold B towards the center until it matches the length of A. For one big pocket on one side, simply fold under until you have matching length when compared to A. The card pockets on the other side work just the same, but you make two folds. You can test with actual cards to see if the slots are the right size. Pin the folds in place, and if there is extra length on either side, just trim it off.

Tehdäksesi taskut laukun sisäpuolelle, taita B:tä haitariksi kunnes se on A:n pituinen. Yhden isomman taskun tekemiseksi toiselle puolelle, tee yksi taitos. Toisen puolen korttitaskut toimivat samoin, paitsi taitoksia on kaksi. Voit testata korteilla ovatko taskut oikean syvyiset.

Then, if you want to make the folds neater, iron and top-stitch each folded edge that's on the right side of the fabric. Sew along the sides and in the middle of the card pocket side.

Siistimmän lopputuloksen saamiseksi, silitä ja tikkaa kankaan oikealla puolella näkyvät taskujen reunat. Ompele sitten taskujen sivut ja korttipuolen keskisauma.

Next, sew A and B together, wrong sides together. Sew all four sides. Also, at this point I lost my cool because my fabric was fraying everywhere, so I also serged the edges. You don't have to do this so an overlocker is not necessary, as these edges will be later covered with bias tape, but I did it for my own peace of mind because the fabric was a pain to work with. (Of course the iron-on interfacing would have been my best friend here, but I didn't happen to have any and couldn't be bothered to go buy some :D)

Seuraavaksi ompele A ja B yhteen reunoistaan, kankaiden nurjat puolet vastakkain.

***

Onwards to the zipper! Use your book cover (or the pages) to measure that your zipper is long enough. If it is too long, use side cutters to trim off the excess. Sandwich the end of the zipper in between two E pieces and sew. Be careful not to break your needle onto the zipper teeth! Do the same on the other end of the zipper, using the remaining two E pieces.

Seuraavaksi vetoketju! Käytä kirjasi kansia (tai irtileikattuja sivuja) mitataksesi vetoketjun pituuden. Jos vetoketju on liian pitkä, leikkaa ylimääräinen pituus pois sivuleikkureilla. Laita vetoketjun pää kahden E-palan väliin ja ompele. Varo ettet riko neulaa vetoketjun metalliosiin! Toista sama vetoketjun toisessa päässä jäljelläolevilla kahdella E-palalla.

Once you've sewn both ends, fold the pieces out and iron. You can also top-stitch to keep things in place. Trim off the excess width. Now sandwich the zipper between two F pieces and sew along the edge (the red dotted line, down the entire length of the zipper and the fabric at the end).

Iron the seams open, top-stich and repeat on the other side.

Silitä saumat auki, tikkaa päältä ja toista vetoketjun toisella puolella.

It's time to attach the zipper onto the main piece (A+B). (As you can see, I also serged the edges of the zipper piece, but you can just trim off the excess with scissors if you want. The bias tape will cover these raw edges as well.) Open your zipper, and with the main piece facing up (folded pockets up) attach the zipper on, with the zipper teeth facing in and the zipper facing up. Do not sew the very ends of the zipper, but leave a gap (see next pictures).

Seuraavaksi vetoketju kiinnitetään aiemmin ommeltuun kappaleeseen (A+B).

Fold the ends of the zipper underneath the now-formed bag. Yes, they are on the outside, but they will be covered by the book once we're done. Sew the ends (be careful not to sew on any of the pockets inside!)

So then you should have something like this:
Tässä kohtaa pitäisi näyttää suunnilleen tältä:

The red circles are there because unless you used a serger, these edges are going to be raw. If you wish to do something about that, now is the time (use fray check, glue on small pieces of fabric or something like that). Since I serged the edges and I'm lazy, I just left them as they were, since they will not be that visible once the middle pocket is installed. But if you're worried about fraying, you can do something about that at this point.

Punaiset ympyrät osoittavat kohtia joissa kankaan reuna on näkyvissä. :)

***

Next up: bias tape! I didn't have bias tape, so I just cut some of the fabric I had left on the bias and made my own. In this tutorial I am not going to walk you through how to attach bias tape, because there are plenty of good tutorials on that already. See one here. I attached bias tape around the edges but not across the zipper (see following pictures). I folded the ends of the bias tape under when I got to the zipper part.

Seuraavaksi kanttinauhan kiinnitys reunaan.

***

So lastly, the pocket in the middle, plus the folds that prevent the clutch from opening all the way. Meaning, pieces C and D.
Sandwich your shorter zipper between the two C pieces like in the picture below. Sew along the upper edge, catching the zipper as you sew. Flip open, iron and top-stitch (like with the longer zipper and the F pieces).

Aseta lyhyempi vetoketju C-palojen väliin kuten alapuolisessa kuvassa.

Next, flip the bottom edge over on both sides so the unattached edge of the zipper is sandwiched in between (see next pictures). Sew along the edge.

Ompele taas reunaa pitkin.

Then you have this weird tube with a zipper somewhere in between. Flip the tube so you get the zipper onto the right side, open the zipper and iron & top-stitch the other side of the zipper.

Take your D pieces, fold in half right sides together and sew along the red dotted lines. Leave the bottom open for turning around. Turn the pieces inside out, fold the raw edges in, iron flat and sew the gap closed close to the edge.

Taita D-palat puoliksi (oikeat puolet vastakkain) ja ompele reunat. Jätä alareuna ompelematta jotta voit kääntää ommellun kappaleen ympäri aukon kautta. Käännä oikea puoli näkyviin, taita kankaan reunat sisään aukosta ja silitä. Ompele alareunan aukko kiinni läheltä reunaa.

I serged the edges of the C pocket piece, but that is not necessary. You can simply use a straight stitch so the pocket keeps its form while you attach the side flaps (D pieces). You might want to trim the edges close to the stitches. Attach the D pieces to the C piece on both ends of the pocket so that the gap you sewed shut is at the bottom.

Almost done! Now all you need to do is attach the pocket piece to the main piece from the side flaps you just completed. Hand-stitch the flaps on the inside of the zipper (so essentially, they are attached to the inside of the F piece that runs along the zipper. You can also sew them into the very sides of the A+B piece if your fabric doesn't have a pattern that hides the stitches like mine did. The back of the A+B piece will be glued onto the book so any stitches there won't be visible.)

Melkein valmis!

Once you have sewn all four flaps into the sides, you're done! All that's left is to glue the now-ready piece into some book covers.

^Apparently my book didn't like the decoupage lacquer much since the cover went all wonky. So be advised, this can happen with some books! The previous Watchmen notebook was all good with the same lacquer... well, onwards nonetheless!
First, spread glue onto the inside of the back of the book and press your bag into it. Let dry for a bit, then spread generous amounts of glue onto the inside of the front and back and attach the rest of the bag. Make sure the fabric lays flat against the cover. Press until the glue holds. Let dry.

No mutta, jatketaan kuitenkin.
Levitä ensin liimaa kirjan selkämyksen sisäpuolelle ja paina laukun keskiosa paikalleen. Anna kuivua hetki, levitä sitten reilusti liimaa kummankin kannen sisäpuolelle ja paina laukun loppuosa kiinni kansiin. Tasoita painellen laukun sisäpuolelta niin ettei kangas jää kuprulle mistään. Purista kunnes liima pitää. Anna kuivua.

DONE! VALMIS!

So, this tutorial took me like two days to do. The sewing process itself is quick (a few hours), but taking photos all the time, then the editing and making the tutorial... now that took ages. But I hope this is of help to you if you decide to make your own book clutch, and I hope the bilingual thing going on wasn't too distracting. Please let me know if there's anything that needs clarification, and if you have any questions or comments, leave a reply below in the comment section. And if you decide to make one of your own, please leave me a link so I can check it out!

So that's all this time. Until next time!

love,
scoundrel
